The statement comes as pressure mounts on Sunak to call for a vote sooner rather than later. Addressing speculation about a spring election, Sunak stated that it is his "working assumption" that the public would not be heading to the polls in the coming months.

Opposition figures have been discussing the possibility of an early election, with the Labour party describing it as the "worst kept secret in Parliament." This move could also be seen as a way for Labour to criticize Sunak for supposedly hesitating or avoiding an election if it is delayed.

Even the Liberal Democrats have been vocal about their desire for an election in May, urging Sunak not to "cling on" to power for the rest of the year.

However, Sunak remained firm in his intent to hold the election during the latter part of the year, emphasizing his focus on cutting taxes for voters and opposing Sir Keir Starmer's green proposals.

During a visit to a youth center in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, the Prime Minister said, "So my working assumption is we'll have a general election in the second half of this year, and in the meantime, I've got lots that I want to get on with."

Although he did not explicitly rule out a May election, Sunak reiterated his commitment to managing the economy effectively and tackling illegal migration.

Responding to Sunak's announcement, Jeremy Miles MS, a candidate vying to replace Mark Drakeford as the next First Minister, expressed discontent with the Conservative leader's plans.

Miles stated, "Rishi Sunak and the Tories are determined to drag us all through even more months of their failing, out of touch UK government. It's time politics in the UK is brought back to offering genuine public service and making our economy fairer for Wales' future. Everyone knows the country is in desperate need of a General Election - let's just get on with it!"
