This initiative comes as part of the council's comprehensive five-year program, titled 'At Home in Powys – Housing Business Plan', which aims to increase the availability of affordable homes for social rent.

The buy-back scheme is a strategic approach that will effectively bolster the council's existing housing stock, ultimately mitigating the mounting pressure caused by the shortage of affordable rental properties in Powys. By repurchasing former council houses, the council aims to restore their status as social housing, ensuring they serve the needs of the local community.

Councillor Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys, expressed the council's determination to address the housing emergency in the county. He commended the Welsh Government for providing the opportunity for councils in Wales to once again build homes and repurchase former council properties.

Under this buy-back scheme, the council will acquire properties that were previously sold as part of the right-to-buy program. By combining the repurchase of these former right-to-buy properties with the construction of new council homes, the council strives not only to enhance the availability of social housing but also to foster a stronger, fairer, and greener future for Powys.

Councillor Dorrance further emphasized that the council's goal is to meet the housing needs of residents and contribute to the overall welfare of the community. By expanding the stock of social housing, the council will be able to accommodate individuals and families who are struggling to find affordable homes in Powys.

If you are a current owner of a former right-to-buy property in Powys and you are considering selling, the council encourages you to reach out. To participate in the buy-back scheme, interested individuals must have obtained an independent valuation of their property. To learn more about the scheme and discuss your property, please contact the council via email at [email protected].
