The 50-year-old economy minister won the Welsh Labour leadership contest, beating Education Minister Jeremy Miles with 51.7% of the vote.

Gething's leadership campaign was not without controversy, as he received a £200,000 donation from a company whose owner had been convicted of environmental offences.

Despite this, he has now succeeded Mark Drakeford in Wales' top job.

During his first words as First Minister, Gething thanked his predecessor Drakeford for his service to Wales.

He also spoke about the importance of devolution and the need to stand up for Wales in the face of hostility from the UK government.

Gething highlighted the diversity of Wales and the importance of representation, noting that Wales is now the first nation in Europe to be led by a black person.

The session concluded with Gething being confirmed as First Minister, with 27 votes in his favor. Conservative Senedd leader Andrew RT Davies received 13 votes, while Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth received 11.

Montgomeryshire MS Russell George did not vote due to being absent.
