The town council's Services Committee recently held a meeting to discuss the growing problem of vandalism and anti-social behaviour, which has extended to public facilities like the public toilets and St Mary's Church.

During the meeting, Councillor Margaret Lewington highlighted a disturbing incident that was reported by a resident. The resident recounted a distressing encounter at St Mary's Church, where an individual was found sitting on her family's gravestone. Despite requests to move, the person not only refused but also engaged in offensive behavior, including verbal abuse, spitting, and vaping.

This incident left the resident deeply upset and disturbed. Cllr Lewington stressed the importance of addressing and halting such behaviors, as there is a growing perception that St Mary's Church is being misused. She emphasized that urgent action needs to be taken to protect these sacred sites.

The Town Council recognizes the significance of safeguarding these sites and providing safe public facilities. They are now calling on residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities, as increased community awareness and engagement can contribute to a safer and more secure environment for everyone.

While those engaging in anti-social behavior constitute a small minority, the impact of their actions reverberates throughout the entire community.

The Town Council urges residents to collaborate in creating a community that prioritizes the well-being and security of its people and their shared spaces. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the police, as well as any incidents they believe may constitute a crime. By reporting these incidents to the appropriate authorities, residents play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for everyone.

Both the Town Council and the Police will deploy available resources, including CCTV, to thoroughly investigate reported incidents. Newtown is a vibrant and close-knit community, and it is disheartening to see such incidents of anti-social behavior tarnishing its reputation.
