The battle to keep the Wales Air Ambulance base in north Powys rages on as local politicians and campaigners express their disappointment and anger over the extended delay in the decision on the preferred option of the air ambulance's review.

Despite setbacks, pressure mounts to ensure the base remains open and operational. Originally, it was anticipated that a preferred option would be revealed at a meeting on December 21.

However, Llais, an independent statutory body established by the Welsh Government to allow the public greater participation in health and social care services planning and delivery, demanded additional public consultation, causing a frenzy in the local community.

The decision now lingers, inciting frustration and concern among residents. Campaigners who advocate for the base to stay in Welshpool instead of relocating to North East Wales express their fierce opposition to any potential move.

Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams acknowledges the efforts of the community and campaigners to preserve the Welshpool base, extending its lifespan until 2026. However, he emphasizes that beyond that date, its fate is uncertain, urging for continued advocacy to secure its long-term existence.

Cllr Elwyn Vaughan, Leader of the Plaid Cymru group at Powys County Council concurs with the public sentiment in favor of preserving Option 6. This option would retain both the Welshpool and Caernarfon bases, implement split shifts, and introduce a new Rapid Response Vehicle in the North East to serve areas such as Gwynedd, Wrexham, and Shotton.

Mirroring the sentiments of his fellow politicians, Montgomeryshire MS Russell George calls upon the community to persevere in the fight to save the Welshpool Air Ambulance base.

Over the past 18 months, the campaign to preserve the base has united the region, underlining the crucial nature of this life-saving service.

As 2024 begins, further information regarding the final decision on the Wales Air Ambulance bases is expected. While a shortlist of options is slated to be released in February, both Craig Williams MP and Russell George MS vehemently oppose the closure of the Welshpool base.

They assert that the arguments for shuttering the base are flawed, eroding local trust, and insist that the current operations must remain in place to safeguard the well-being of the community.
